For nearly forty years Carolina Psychiatric Services has provided personal and professional mental healthcare to the Columbia community. It is our goal to continue providing this care for many more years and “help people flourish, not just survive.”
A Brief History of Carolina Psychiatric Services
In 1983 three young psychiatrists, Thomas W. Messervy, Richard Harding, and Larry W. Nelson, formed a partnership to provide psychiatric services in the Midlands area. They became associated with Charter Rivers Hospital and built an office at 107 West Hospital Drive adjacent to Lexington Hospital and Charter Rivers Hospital in West Columbia. Shortly after it was built the office was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The building was quickly rebuilt and the practice remained at this site until 1995 when it moved to Medical Park Nine on the Palmetto Richland campus. In 2000, the practice moved back to West Columbia where they currently reside at 160 Medical Circle.
