Penni A. Sutton, LISW-CP
Penni Sutton joined Carolina Psychiatric Services in October 2019. Ms. Sutton has a varied background in many areas of mental health treatment with a valuable combination of education and experience. She received her undergraduate degrees in Social Work and Sociology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, having graduated summa cum laude. Her graduate degree was obtained at Washington University in St. Louis, consistently ranked as the number 1 or 2 School of Social Work by the U.S. News & World Report.
After receiving licensure as a LISW-CP, Ms. Sutton came to South Carolina on a National Health Service Corps grant. This is a highly competitive federal program in which the U.S. government pays a substantial amount each year, tax free, toward a qualified health professional’s graduate student loan in exchange for a commitment to practice in an underserved community. In this capacity, Ms. Sutton was the mental health therapist for the Barnwell County School System and the mental health clinics in Barnwell and Aiken, working with children and adolescents.
Ms. Sutton’s subsequent experience includes provision of therapeutic services to individuals suffering with PTSD resulting from sexual, physical, emotional abuse, and is also a Certified Forensic Examiner of sexual abuse of children. She has also worked as a hospice social worker and an impatient behavioral health specialist.
In her spare time, Ms. Sutton enjoys traveling, reading, shopping for antiques, and spending time with her daughter and grandchildren. She also loves animals and saltwater reef tanks.
